What’s In a Name

Alexander Berry, a successful trader and businessman, was a name synonymous with Sydney’s development between 1820 and 1860. Legend has it that Berry imported a champion racehorse called the Jerry Bailey from England and agisted it alongside the banks of the Shoalhaven River on the New South Wales south coast. At this location grew a village that was named in honour of the powerful thoroughbred. Changed in modern times to Shoalhaven Heads, Jerry Bailey village was the site upon which the vessel Jerry Bailey was built and completed by Richard Hall in 1989. Therein lies the name.
